The Ivan Series

The Ivan series arose from a need for more surfaces to paint on coupled by a desire to use what I have on hand.

These pieces are painted on chip board that was used as hurricane shutters for my windows during the summer of 2004. I’ve included on this page one drawing not in the Ivan series, but that was drawn over the course of the hurricane. Like so many people in Florida that summer, I waited out the hurricane in central Florida.

C.M. Laster calls art like this “up-cycled” art. I like the term up-cycling. Recycling something suggests that you take something and make the same thing from it.

I made something better. The Ivan pieces have been very popular, sometimes being claimed before they are even finished. There is, of course, a limited number of Ivan pieces I can make, because when the chipboard that covered my windows during the storm is gone, the series ends.
